My grandmother bought me a new craftsman timing light it had an alligator clamp with a spring that would attach to spark plug and wire. And yes a very important note you mentioned is to be aware of the cables hanging into the fan because it gets very hungry and will eat those cables right up, working on a 1971 Grand Prix.
