If you are connecting the battery charger to the memory saver (probably with alligator clips), you should be good. Check to confirm the battery charger is offering sufficient power per the directions of your memory saver.

As long as the memory saver still has sufficient power, it should be able to maintain the car’s memory settings. If you use an AC adapter or a spare car battery you can go at least a week. If you use a battery pack or a 9 volt battery, it would depend on the power demands of your car. I would not go longer than a day if possible

You should be able to swap out the auxiliary battery and still keep your settings

With all the lights off (unscrew/disconnect the one in the hood if there is one) , a fresh alkaline AA battery is about 1.6V so 8 of them in a pack = ~12.8V will be more than adequate. However, a car battery, especially a weak one that was just driven, can be well over 14V. That presents the problem of putting a high charging current on the alkaline battery pack (bad!) so you need a diode in series to prevent that reverse current from flowing while either car battery and the battery pack are connected together. A typical silicon diode has a voltage drop of about 0.6V giving you ~12V from the battery pack which is more than adequate to keep the memory alive.

(People recommend disconnecting the main battery when servicing the small auxiliary battery to prevent shorts and electrical damage.)
