That’s what happened after the 1964 season, Tim.

It would be cool to dive back into this topic with one of today’s major engine builders.

I had the good fortune to visit the Hendrick engine shop a while back. It was flat out amazing.

The pushrod design is a compromise for power. Pushrod wells compromise intake porting. Intake ports must often be tall and skinny, have protuberances, or make turns that would not be necessary with OHC. RPM is limited by the pushrod design, with valve float likely at high rpm. Pushrod design is mostly limited to two valves per cylinder since the additional intake runners and pushrods would create even more problems. Overhead cam engines aren’t just for fuel efficiency — they more easily allow for higher power, higher RPM, more valves per cylinder. I would guess that NASCAR is restricting the design to limit power output.

I recently bought a 2023 Durango RT Premium Blacktop. Your Challenger would likely kick my Durango’s ass but the Durango RT is so much fun. Especially in Sport mode with the throttle and transmission remapping, it’s like a Jekyll and Hyde personality switch.

5.7 hemi, 6 seed manual. Octane red pearlcoat with a GT hood. I have had a 69 mach 1, fairlane 500, 71 mustang, 73 Fury police interceptor, Plymouth Satellite, 78 and 79 Nova’s.
I love my Challenger.
