Diesel-powered trucks have never been more popular, and Ford’s Power Stroke family of Diesel engines have been a mainstay of the marketplace since they were introduced in 1994. While these engines are well known for their durability and longevity, they still require a rebuild at some point. How to best diagnose, repair, and rebuild these engines is somewhat of a mystery for those without access to the factory manuals…until now. This book covers the vast majority of Power Stroke Diesel engines on the road, and gives you the full story on their design. Each part of the engine is described and discussed in detail, with full-color photos of every critical component. A full and complete step-by-step engine rebuild is also included.
I have just finished rebuilding my entire 7.3 L power stroke. It is a 1996 f350. The book over all for the 7.3 had a really good detailed instructions for the disassemble portion of the job. It fails to tell you to disconnect the fuel lines on the driver's side. A very simple detail and easy to spot yet neglected to inform you of this. When it comes to putting the whole thing back together it has minimal instructions, if I had not had previous mechanical experience it would have been way harder to out it all back together. DO NOT TRUST THE TORQUE SPECS IN THIS BOOK! There is a misprint on the cam shaft retaining bolts. The book chart states that the torque is 50 ft lbs when in reality it is only 18 ft lbs. I didn't catch that and snapped a bolt off in the block and had to go digging to get it out. Also the Ford manual says you can reuse head bolts for the 7.3 , don't do this just buy news ones. You'll end up snapping one off like I did, then your gonna go digging......like I did.... Over all it's great to get the basic idea but your going to need other references for torque specs and other small little trivial things. Not bad for the price tho. Just verify everything it says.
If you don't know your way around a 6.0 this book in not much help. Example big explanation on how to remove alternator. When it came to taking off hpop - oil cooler - egr - and taking apart the heads not much info.
Absolutely horrible. Great photos of nothing. Who needs 4-full color pages of how to take the air filter and fan belt out? What a joke! I feel like I’ve been suckered.
Clear pictures and simple text. I sort of know what I'm doing, the clear pictures speed things up. Too bad the truck got totaled the day before the book arrived.
