Inexpensive DAC upgrade and a headphone amp to boot

Really inexpensive. Very good DAC chip. The headphone amp is good for easy to drive headphones. Also useful for recording. Did I say inexpensive? A DAC doesn't have to cost hundreds. It's all about the chip.

Audio Technica ATH-M50x

Very nice sounding headphones. Slightly warm with a little goose on the bass. These are not neutral. A lot of people consider them superior mixing and mastering cans. The ATH-M70x fits that bill more properly. Less coloring and very neutral.

I run flac files through my DAC, into my Aric Audio fully balanced tube preamp and then into my headphone amp and these things sound spectacular for the price. Got mine for $92 shipped. Lots of people sell these in like-new condition.

Hamilton KB 950 Trumpet Stand

Very decent stand for the price. I use a sock on it to prevent scratches to the bell of my $5000 trumpet. I got mine on sale for $6.99 + $3.50 shipping. For the usual 13 or 14 dollars they could include a sock, instead of charging four bucks for one. Spring loaded and adjustable.

Affordable, basic solution

I use the Rolls DB24 to send the unbalanced signal from my Macbook Pro to my Aric Audio fully balanced tube preamp, and then to the balanced inputs of my NAD 218 THX amplifier. Beautiful tube warmth with 780 watts of available peak power, with balanced signal noise rejection. Awesome!

The unit is very solidly built and performs flawlessly. Three modes of input is an excellent feature. I have used the 3.5mm jack, dual 1/4 inch TS and RCA. RCA seems to be the best for my application. I find the level adjustments very convenient as well. I can attenuate the signal going to the preamp if the wife is sleeping

Best stand for the price

All metal. space for two headphones, rounded bar for better support. I searched long and hard to find these features, and it would have cost 60 to 80 bucks from two other companies. Theirs might be heavier and maybe a little more stylish, but for 1/3 or 1/4 of the price, this little unit does the job perfectly! I actually prefer the understated style of this one myself.
It is a teeny bit out of vertical, but a file will fix that in a minute. I have to deduct a star, since that should have been taken care of before it left the factory, but I still heartily recommend this product.

Bad knock off

The end came apart after less than a year. The unit simply died a short time later.
